With more Chicago condo and home owners deciding to remodel and upgrade their current residences instead of buying a new house or condo, one of the projects that many decide to tackle is refinishing hardwood floors. Not only will refinishing your hardwood floors give your home a great new look, it will add value if you ever decide to sell. Hardwood floors that have a beautiful finish are one of the top selling points that many prospective buyers look for when shopping for a new condo.

Refinishing your hardwood floors isn’t as complicated as you might think, although it can be time consuming and a little labor intensive. There are a few tools and supplies you will need though. Nearly all can be rented if you don’t want to lay out the money to buy them or think you won’t have a need for them in the future.

The basic tools you will need are some kind of sander, which we’ll cover in the next section, safety glasses, dust mask or respirator, ear plugs, sand paper, masking tape, drop cloths or plastic sheeting, stain and plenty of rags or tack cloths.

Before you begin sanding, you need to determine the thickness of your wood flooring. It needs to be at least 3/4 inch thick before sanding, otherwise you risk sanding too deeply and damaging the floor. Older wood flooring is normally fairly thick, but some of the newer engineered wood floor material can be thinner, so check before you start to sand.

Start by emptying the room of all furniture and sweeping your floor to remove any debris that might cause scratches while sanding. Since there will be a good deal of dust generated from the sanding process it may be wise to also take down any window coverings, pictures on the walls, cover ceiling lights and also put a plastic sheet barrier over any doorways to other rooms to prevent dust drifting. You should also tape off heating and cooling vents and electrical outlets. The trim along the edge of the floor should also be carefully removed and sanded by hand. If you can open some windows and even place a fan to draw out the dust it would help a lot.

You can rent a drum sander at most hardware stores. This tool takes some getting used to if you’ve never used one before, so it’s wise to practice a little in a part of the room that won’t be seen as easily until you get the hang of it. Always tip the drum sander up before you turn it on. Never start it while it is still flat on the floor. Gradually lower it and then move it back and forth or from side to side, never let it sit still or it will sand out a deep pocket and you’ll ruin your floor. Keep moving until you’ve covered the entire surface.

If your floor has a lot of scratches or needs a lot of sanding, begin with about 20 grit sandpaper. The lower the grit number, the coarser the grit and the higher the number, the finer the grit. So you should progress from low to high, and usually finish with about 120 grit. It’s best to save the edges for last and do them by hand. Once you are finished sanding, vacuum thoroughly and it’s also a good idea to wipe the floor down with a tack cloth to be sure you get all the dust up

Now you are ready to actually stain your hardwood floor. Depending on what type of water-based or oil-based stain you decided upon, you may have to apply more than one coat and do a light sanding between coats. Be sure to read the instructions on the product before starting. And remember that the color on the can label or in the store won’t be the exact color of your floor, so try out a small patch in an area that isn’t easily visible to make sure you are satisfied with the color. Be sure to have plenty of ventilation while staining as the fumes can be strong.

Once you have all the coats applied and the floor is completely dry, you should probably rent a buffer to really give the stain job a great finish. Just like the drum sander, start slow until you get the hang of using the tool. The final step then is to reattach any molding or trim you removed (after staining it of course) and apply a polyurethane finish. You may have to give the floor more than one coat with drying time between. You can do this by hand with rags, but using a tool with a long handle similar to a sponge mop will save both your back and time. Read the label for recommended drying time, but it’s always a good idea to wait an extra day or two especially in high humidity before moving the furniture and any rugs back into the room.

Refinishing your hardwood floors will add beauty and value to your condo or house. Most Chicago real estate agents have noted that units with hardwood floors like the ones listed in these new construction condos http://www.bestchicagocondos.com/new-construction-condos/index.html sell better than homes without hardwood floors. This not only is a great selling point that many buyers look for, but something you can enjoy yourself for years to come.

Every year it’s the same old decorations that come out of the box. We take them out the box of Christmas decorations, clean them up and place them out for display. At the end of season, back they go. Some may be looking a little tired. Decide on a change this year. Retire or restore some of these oldies (but goodies) and opt for some of these enchanting Christmas picture frame ideas. Okay, so some of us are emotionally attached to our decorations just the way they are and parting with them would bring undue stress. That’s fine. But, what’s terrific about these ideas is that some of them use your old decorations! Be proud of yourself because now you’re stepping into the “vintage” arena of design. Now that’s a step, isn’t it?

Does your manger display need a paint job? Preserve the life of your favorite scene by placing these figurines in a partitioned shadow box picture frame. Perform some quick touch ups with paint from a local craft store and let dry. Glue or tape your figurines so they don’t move when you move the box.

Preserve your smaller Christmas wreath by setting it in a picture frame. Whether you’re using natural or artificial materials, the beauty of your wreath can be viewed for many years to come. You might consider using a clear lacquer spray to encourage the pine needles to stay put.

Create a poinsettia print display using a picture frame. The pressed and dried leaves and colorful bracts of the poinsettia are lovely when accented with gold and silver colors. Consider using ribbons, braided cords or even paper and then, for a sparkling effect, try applying a glitter glue spray to the dried leaves.

Changing out your regular ones for glass picture frames will help to create your winter wonderland effect. Etched glass and frosted glass picture frames work well with almost anything. They will soften any effects that darker and bolder colored picture frames may have. This will help to create a wispy, whimsical effect of a snowy Christmas and may also contribute some sparkle when they catch the light.

Are you a Christmas card saver? A montage of Christmas cards set in a picture frame will add a distinctive and intimate touch to your home d

If you are reading this article, it means that you possess respectable knowledge on how to make money at home and probably moved past beyond being one of the estimated 6 million people who fall prey to online money-making scams. However, with success in the WAHM field comes the wham part - sacrificing personal home life in favor of professional career moves.

This need not be the case, however, especially when you can apply these tips to applying your knowledge of how to make money at home with balancing your need of how to make love at home!

Organize, Organize, Organize

The need for efficient and effective organization cannot be overemphasized if you are to apply your knowledge of how to make money at home successfully. The adages about a place for everything and everything in its place as well as about a time for everything and everything in its time are ones that you can and you should apply wisely.

You can organize on three levels. First, you have to organize your time. You have to set a daily and weekly schedule - when to work on the home business, when to rest, when to relax, when to perform household chores, when to conduct home management tasks, when to cuddle up with hubby and kids - and stick to your guns.

Of course, you can be flexible especially when you have kids. Still, your schedule must be adhered to as closely as possible barring emergencies if you desire order in the house and in the business. You will indeed find that how to make money at home involves how to make order out of chaos.

Second, you need to organize your work areas. This is very important as you cannot and should not waste time and effort looking for every scrap of paper, every piece of office equipment, every loose paperclip in your already-crowded daily schedule.

Also, you have to keep your work areas separate from the rest of the living areas lest you find your office files becoming drawing paper, your ink mixed in with the infant milk, your laptop the new toy for the little boy. If possible, convert a spare room into a home office and keep it securely locked to avoid disasters of the kid kind.

Third, you must organize your business records. Your business records are valuable in keeping your business in the black when it comes to tax filing time, keeping business contacts, maintaining tip-top accounting records and generally just keeping tabs on the quantitative side of the business.

Remember that along with the knowledge of how to make money at home and how to run a successful home-based business come the responsibilities to pay taxes, keep honest accounting records and follow the laws pertaining to your business.

Rest, Relax, Unwind

As a work-at-home-mom, you will be required to perform many roles and to perform them well. You will be mother, wife, daughter, businesswoman, aunt, and friend all rolled into one superwoman package.

This can take its toll on your mind and body. To avoid burnout, you have to set aside time to rest, to relax, and to unwind from the pains of being a WAHM. If possible, you must consider your “me-time” as sacred and require that your family respect it to be sacred, too.

When you have applied these tips to balance how to make money at home with how to maintain your personal home life, you will have the best of both worlds. And what worlds these are - filled with emotional love and financial security.

Organic crib mattresses, made from eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, can be a great choice for your baby’s nursery. Many parents-to-be are unaware that conventional mattresses are typically made with synthetic materials that can break down and release harmful chemicals into the air.

Babies, with their sensitive immune systems, can be particularly susceptible to inhaling these chemicals or absorbing them through the skin. Thus, the purchase of an organic crib mattress along with natural wood furniture and other eco-friendly products can help you create a healthier nursery that benefits not only your baby, but your family and the environment as well.

Whether you’re awaiting the birth of your first child or already have children, you probably already know that newborn babies tend to need a lot of rest. In fact, according to experts, babies can initially spend an average of 16 hours a day asleep! Given this fact, the sleeping environment you prepare for your baby is especially important. Read on to find out more about the dangers of traditional crib mattresses and why buying a natural crib mattress is a better choice.

Conventional Crib Mattresses

Many conventional mattresses are filled with polyurethane foam which contains a variety of chemical additives. In fact, polyurethane, a petroleum product, contains known carcinogens. In addition, it is extremely flammable.

To address the danger of using polyurethane foam, manufacturers treat mattresses with toxic industrial flame retardants that contain harmful ethers such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). PBDEs can leach out of the mattress and into the air. They have been linked to thyroid problems and other neurobehavioral disruptions. Due to this danger, PBDEs have been banned in Europe since 2004. In the United States, legislation banning manufacturers’ use of PBDEs has been passed in the states of California and Washington.

Conventional mattresses typically have an outer shell made from vinyl/PVC (polyvinyl chloride) which contains phthalates. Phthalates are animal carcinogens and have been linked to damage of the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to toxins and chemicals, especially during the first years of life so you don’t want to expose your baby to these dangers unnecessarily. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of organic crib mattresses.

Organic Crib Mattresses

Mattresses are manufactured with eco-friendly materials such as certified organic cotton which is grown without synthetic pesticides, heavy metals or genetically modified organisms.

Waterproof layers are constructed from polyethylene which is considered to be non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Mattresses are constructed with non-toxic fire protectants.

Manufacturing materials and processes are better for the environment.

It is important to note that manufacturers can be somewhat liberal with labeling. So be sure to do your research. Review the product information and look for crib mattresses made with “100% certified organic” fibers.

As you set up your baby registry and begin your preparations, consider first how a product will contribute to the environment you are creating for your precious little one. You would never willingly lie your baby down on a pile toxins and carcinogens that you could see. So remember that there are unseen dangers as well. The good news is that you can make healthier choices for your child. An organic crib mattress is a great first step.

A look at the sheer variety of blinds available on the market today and how homeowners can use them as a stylish and elegant window covering.

Blinds, and especially the vertical variety are an excellent window covering for all types of room; they offer a practical and versatile solution to blocking light and granting privacy. In terms of the materials used in the construction of blinds fabric, aluminium, vinyl, wood and bamboo are all commonplace. The range of materials and immense versatility of blinds makes them perfect for any room and ideal for any design theme. For instance the clean lines created by plain white blinds can be an extraordinary addition to a minimalistic, contemporarily styled room. Shutters can also be used in conjunction with blinds opening up a variety of design options for the homeowner.

Blinds are an effective method or reducing the light in a room whilst controlling its temperature. For those with wooden floors, carpets and other soft furnishings the fact that blinds can completely control the light in a room means that fading is reduced and possessions last that much longer. As the slats, or veins of blinds can be tilted to almost any angle, the homeowner is given a window covering that allows control of sunlight throughout the day, for instance, a room that is especially bright in the mornings will benefit from a blind as the brightest parts of the day can be blocked whilst when it is darker, more natural light can be allowed in. Additionally the range of tilts means that privacy can be maintained throughout the day.

In the past blinds have not exactly been the most interesting of window coverings, this however is changing with manufacturers now realising the benefits of including colour coordinated slats and veins with distinct textures. These do not even have to be block colours, now a closed blind can resemble a Caribbean vista or a group of sunflowers. These modern varieties of blinds are an astonishingly original and elegant style choice and can be used to brighten up a plain office, or even decorate a child’s bedroom.

Cleaning blinds is also relatively simple, unlike curtains they do not require to be taken down in order to spruce them up. All that is needed is a damp cloth or duster that can fit between the slats and remove any dirt. Modern PVC treatments make blinds the ideal choice of window covering in bathrooms and kitchens where humidity levels can be high. Although it should be remembered that softwood blinds are rarely advisable in humid rooms as they have a tendency to warp in these conditions.

In the past there have been safety concerns when using blinds in children’s bedrooms as the cords can be considered a choking, or strangling hazard. This problem has been lessened however with the introduction of wands that hang from the side of the blind and with a simple twist can alter the angle of the slats. Especially important in children’s bedrooms is the blocking of light, once again blind designers has developed slats that mesh together tightly enough to effectively blackout any room.

Blinds are an affordable and versatile form of window covering. With the range of decorative options, they are today the interior designer’s choice in many homes as a chic and stylish way to block light and create privacy. So if planning a revamp for a tired looking room, consider blinds instead of curtains; for a modern, contemporary style solution there is no comparison.

If you plan on remodeling your kitchen, you may be considering hiring a contractor for the project. On the other hand, you may plan on taking on the job yourself. That’s fine, many people choose to remodel their kitchens themselves. You’ll have more control over the remodeling project, and will most likely save yourself some money. One thing you should keep in mind though when you remodel your kitchen is the chance of accidents and/or injuries. It can happen, but by following certain safety tips, the chance of injury to yourself or others is minimized.

One of the primary dangers of a remodeling project is tools. Whatever project you’re working on, whether replacing the kitchen lights, kitchen cabinets, or the flooring, you will most likely be using tools which could possibly cause injuries if used improperly. Because of the risk of injury, it’s important that you know the tools that you’ll be using, and that you know how to use them properly. Chances are, you’ve used most of your tools before, and you know their proper use. But there’s a chance you may be using something unfamiliar. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the tools that you do not know how to use. This will not only help you to finish your project more quickly and efficiently, but it will also reduce the risk of injury.

You also need to know your physical limits. Know how much you can lift safely. If you try to lift something too heavy, you run the risk of back injury. If you need assistance in lifting something, don’t hesitate to ask someone for some help. You also need to keep in mind your ability to work. You’ll probably want to finish your remodeling project as soon as you can, but you shouldn’t try to push yourself. If you get tired, then you should take a break. If you try to work when you’re too tired, you risk making mistakes on your project, and also your safety. So, don’t be afraid to take a break for a while, your project will still be there when you get back.

Be aware of your surroundings while you’re remodeling. Know who else is in the kitchen. If you’re remodeling with the help of a friend or relative, you should know where they are at all times. You don’t want to be tripping over them, or injuring them because of carelessness. You should also keep an eye on anyone who may enter the kitchen. If you have young children, it is a good idea to block the entrance to the kitchen, to keep them from entering, and possibly getting injured. Speaking of young children, you never want to leave your tools laying around unattended. Children may pick them up, and possibly injure themselves.

The best tip, as far as safety, is to use your common sense when you take on a remodeling project. Listen to your body. If you feel that you’re tired, or need a break, then take one. Not only will it keep you and anyone working with you safe, it will help to ensure quality work on the project.

Whether the location is your bathroom, the kitchen, the sunroom or any other area of the home, tiles can be a great flooring option. They’re durable and attractive. They can last a lifetime or more and still provide beauty to an important part of the room. For the do-it-yourselfer, tiles offer many advantages.

Tiles are versatile.

As a shape, ’tile’ doesn’t refer only to ceramic. They can be made of vinyl, slate, brick or even wood. That variety makes them the most versatile type of flooring. They can be used with equal effectiveness in the basement, the kid’s playroom or the foyer. That makes selection a lot of fun, since there are so many types and designs to choose from.

Perhaps you need an ultra-durable flooring material to cover the entranceway to the home. Ceramic works great. Snow, mud and other outdoor matter present no problem. You may be looking to dress up the bathroom, to give a rich, relaxing look that is also functional. Easy. Vinyl, finished hardwood, ceramic or even slate will do the job.

Tiles are easy to install.

With only a little instruction, anyone can lay tile straight and level. With just a little care, it’s hard to go wrong laying tile. One might think that getting them all to move along the same line could be tricky. But simple techniques make this easy.

By the same token, it might appear at first blush that getting grout into the space between them could be hard to do well. What about smearing? What about bubbles and cracks? It turns out that, thanks to the excellent materials, laying grout cleanly that lasts forever is a lot easier than it looks.

Tiles are durable.

Once they’re down, even inexpensive vinyl tile will last for years and years. Some ceramic tiles hundreds of years old are still doing the job in old homes and buildings. Durability arises both from the hardness of the material and the modularity of the design. Tiles can be replaced. Even if one cracks due to weather, faulty manufacturing or just randomly, it’s not that difficult to remove it and lay down a replacement.

Tiles are easy to care for.

A quick wet mop and dirt and food disappear. Most stains will wipe up with a sponge. Dust and dog hair can be easily whisked away with a broom or a vacuum cleaner. Grout takes a little more effort, but if it’s treated properly a little grout cleaner can keep it sparkling, too.

Most of all, tile is beautiful.

Because tiles are available in materials like slate, polished porcelain types and others, there is a tile that will appeal to all tastes. Whether one prefers the rich dark look of slate, the cheery look and feel of red brick, or the subtle sheen of a soft pink ceramic, there’s a tile material that will please the eye.

Look into all the options available with tile and you’ll quickly find something that suits your needs.

Choosing to replace the floors of a home can be a very big job but the results can be dramatic and stunning. The materials and colour choice for your floors can set the tone for the rest of the decor in your home. There are many materials when it come to installing new flooring so choosing the one that will best meeting your needs and tastes is important. Unlike a coat of paint once the floors are in you will not be able to change it easily. In this article we will be talking about with cork flooring which has many advantages over other flooring materials and for those looking for something different it is something you will see in every home.

Cork flooring has become a very popular choice in the home, delivering both durability and comfort. Although a slightly pricey avenue when it comes to flooring, cork has many benefits that make it well worth the cost. Cork is harvested from cork trees in several Mediterranean countries, and it can only be harvested once every nine years. This creates a limited supply for a material in high demand. Cork flooring is comparable in price to ceramic tile. The many benefits of a cork floor, however, make it worthwhile to invest in cork.

As the main defensive mechanism of ages old trees, cork has natural properties that make it resistant to moisture, insects, and wear and tear. Cork is also comprised of over 90% air, allowing it to take shocks gently, while also quickly coming back to its former shape. This property gives cork flooring great resiliency, allowing it to cushion those standing on it while also maintaining stability. As tree bark, cork flooring is also very tough against moisture. Unlike a normal hardwood floor that may lose its shape when wet for extended periods, cork flooring can keep its shape without cracking. Easy maintenance and clean up of spills will keep cork flooring in prime condition for many years.

A cork floor will maintain its beautiful finish for generations, with just a little care. Suberin, a natural compound within cork, works to keep the cork intact. The compound is also fire resistant, and does not emit any toxic emissions when burnt. The springiness of the cork structure also allows for great noise absorption, absorbing noise instead of reflecting it as hardwood is prone to do.

With just a little upkeep, cork flooring is known to last for many years, as it has in public buildings for a long time. As cork flooring has grown in acceptance, the styles available have also grown. Cork flooring today can be ordered in a wide variety of colors, shades, and patterns. Cork flooring can usually be installed by either gluing down portions, or using interlocking panels called a “floating floor.” Interlocking panels are a little more expensive, but will cut down on the associated installation expenses, as well as improved general reliability. Cork flooring is a excellent alternative to hardwood, and is found today in many affordable models.

Christmas is not usually what one thinks of when thinking Green. This year let’s green up our holidays.

There are many ways we can reduce our energy consumption and reduce waste during this time of year.

1. Switch from traditional Christmas lights to L.E.D. Lights. They will reduce your energy consumption greatly, the average string of 50 lights uses 300 watts of energy, the same 50 set of LED lights only uses 4 watts of energy and last up to 100,000 hours.

Talk about savings! Not only are we saving a huge amount of energy, we are also keeping precious dollars in our bank accounts.

2. Put all your lights on timers. By putting all your lights on timers (inside and out), you will save energy by controlling the amount of hours your lights are on.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve fallen asleep with the lights on many times!

3. Decorate using nature. Try decorating your home using natural items. Pine cones and fresh greens make a beautiful centerpiece for a table or swag for the mantle. Adding pine cones or holly berries to your Christmas tree will give it an elegant, natural touch. White Pine Roping is made from the trimming of the trees and is a great way to decorate the outside. It can also be mulched or composted after the season is over.

4. Try buying gifts that will actually get used for more than a week or two. Books, movies, actual toys like soccer balls or roller skates, toys that use kid power. Buying all that plastic crap that the kids see on TV is just like throwing money down the drain, and polluting our environment. Buy them art supplies that will foster their creativity or a musical instrument. We are so caught up in giving our kids what the marketing companies tell us will make them happy. The toy of the month is not going to make them happy. It may satisfy them for a week or two, but not more than that.

Help them to find their passion, something they will love and grow with.

5. Don’t waste food. The holidays are the biggest eating time of the year. We cook more, we bake like crazy, we basically overindulge. This means that much food gets wasted. Make sure any and all food scraps go into the compost, not the trash can! Freeze or share what you cannot eat yourselves. If you have an abundance of leftovers, take it to your local homeless shelter, a shut in neighbor, or maybe invite someone less fortunate to share your meal. Cookies, cakes and pies given to a shelter or nursing home would be greatly appreciated.

6. When setting your holiday table, go ahead and use the good china! If you have them, cloth napkins are the way to go. It makes the table look beautiful, sophisticated and it saves waste from entering our landfills. Paper napkins, plastic ware and plastic or paper plates is a huge tax on our landfills and they take a lot of energy and trees to make. If you are going to use paper napkins and plates, please do not throw them into the trashcan! Paper napkins and paper plates can be easily composted with your kitchen scraps. This will make clean up a breeze.

6. Use eco friendly wrappings. Use recycled gift bags, Comics, decorate brown paper bags for wrapping paper. At the very least do not throw your wrapping paper into the trash! Wrapping paper can be recycled just like any other paper.

7. Make lists and condense your shopping trips as much as possible, or better yet, do your shopping online. This will save lots of $$ on fuel and also keep your life simpler and less aggravating.

These are easy tips anyone can implement to Green up your Christmas.
